Life has very few ironclad rules you can always count on, but one of them is, if an object is pink and vaguely crescent-shaped, people will think it looks like a vagina. That’s what Nadia Cakes, a bakery based in Maple Grove, Minnesota, learned when they shared a photo of a recent creation on their Facebook page. The cake was meant to represent a geode, aka a cavity in a rock that’s filled with crystals. In other words, a perfectly wholesome treat for a gathering of geology enthusiasts.
That’s not what people saw, though. For lots of people who saw the geode cake, their first thought was, “Nope, that’s a vagina.”
I mean…sure? It’s maybe in the ballpark? But I’m clearly in the minority on this one, because the post has racked up 14k likes and 29k shares. And a LOT of dirty-minded were inspired to post some jokes.
But the best part of this story is how the bakery responded, replying to many of these jokes with some excellent zingers of their own.
The author of these replies is Nadia Cakes’s social media manager, Abby Jimenez, who says poking fun at potential customers is very much in line with their company. “We have snarky quotes on our shirts and on our delivery cars and I’ve always engaged with our customers on social media like I did with the geode cake,” she told Scary Mommy. “We’re a cupcake shop so we never really take ourselves too seriously.”
That edginess is also why Jimenez is a good fit for her social media gig. When she’s not running a bakery’s social media account, she writes romance novels. “I landed my literary agent with a query that had a dick joke in it, so that kind of banter came really naturally for me,” she said.
And honestly, her replies were so good, here are a few more.
Now look, we’ve all had our fun making vagina jokes, but I feel like the science angle really gets lost in this story. Geodes are fascinating even when they don’t resemble genitalia. Like this one:
Yep, nothing naughty about it.
