Every new mom has been there – you have your baby and you’re in love, but there are some other, not-so-rosy realizations that arrive alongside your precious bundle, too.
Sure, there’s the hormones (yeesh), the hot flashes, the hair loss – but there’s also the very real moment when you’re standing in front of your closet wondering whether you’ll ever be able to wear any of your “old” clothes again. My advice? Put everything away except maternity, stretchy, and shirts you can breastfeed in easily (if you’re going that route) and wait until you’re feeling better about what motherhood has done to your body before you get them out and try them on.
And that’s for regular women. For women in Hollywood or otherwise in the spotlight, the pressure can be even greater to look like your old self – a fact that new mom Kylie Jenner admits to struggling with since the birth of her daughter, Stormi, back in February.
She loves being a mom, and even hopes to have another baby one day, but in the meantime, she and sister Kim recently had a deep, heartfelt discussion about the insecurities surrounding the mom-bod transformation on their show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
In the episode, Kylie is riffling through her closet and tossing clothes, lamenting to Kim that “nothing in my closet fits me. I’m getting rid of stuff that I just know is never going to fit me. Like, I know I’m not going to fit into a 25 jean ever again.”
The episode takes place after a shoot, and Kylie admits to feeling particularly insecure about how she doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to wear her favorite jeans again.
Her sister Kim commiserates about the pressure to snap-back, and advises Kylie to give it six-to-eight months.
Um. My first is 21 months, my second is due any day, and zero pairs of my old jeans have fit in the interim. So, my advice would have been more along the lines of “sure, but you look great and you’re a great mom, so give yourself a break, lady.”
Kim’s advice was a bit different, but to be fair, their lives and mine are nothing alike.
“I literally would wear – I’m not joking you – three pairs of shapewear just to get out of the house. You just need to be confidence, get some things that make you feel good about yourself.”
Still solid advice, right? Maybe I should look into that shapewear stuff, myself.
