For many years, Sanjana Madappa worked in animal welfare and had her heart broken when women expecting babies decided they could no longer find room in their homes for the furbabies who had once been happy there. Since she wasn’t a mother herself, however, no one took her opinions on the subject seriously.
Then, she and her husband got pregnant.
Sanjana had a difficult pregnancy from start to finish, and according to her, many people’s advice was to get rid of the dogs she considers part of her family.
“I was told by family, friends, and even my doctor to get rid of my dogs, that my baby came first. I was told the same things that all those people who had given up pets tell me.”
She refused to do any such thing, however, and details in the passionate Facebook post below how her furkids were there for her every step of the way, and how she wouldn’t have made it to the end of her pregnancy without them. And now that her son, Ayan, is here, she still feels the same way.
“I couldn’t ever in good conscience give away an animal that loves me and trusts me with the same innocence and purity that my baby does. I couldn’t abandon a family member to bring in another. I will not betray a life that depends on me as much as my son does. To all those people I will always say, not without my dogs.”
The gorgeous photographs of the whole family do seem to demonstrate that there’s always more room in our hearts to hold onto everyone we love most.
