Mom and photographer Samantha Bishop knows better than most that getting good pictures of children can be a task (or even a chore) and that in parenting (and photography) sometimes compromise is necessary. That goes double for parents of children with special needs – her son, Levi, has autism.
Autism is defined as “a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.”
It can also cause social issues and anxiety, which is what happens to Levi when he’s put in front of a camera. He told his mom that because of his discomfort with eye contact and smiling on command, he struggles with “what to do with his face.”
So, his mother decided that compromise was in order, and allowed her son to wear a T-rex costume in family pictures.
Honestly, I kind of wish I’d thought of this first, because these pictures of Levi and is sister Lola are seriously brilliant good fun.
Having kids is all about finding the joy in every day, and I’d say this family is a few steps ahead on that front.
