Surgery can be a scary prospect no matter how old you are, but adults oftentimes have more or better coping skills than kids have managed to develop during their short lives.
Which is why the idea that Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California had is so genius – letting kiddos chose a car to drive into surgery is nothing less than a stroke of genius.
“It can be traumatizing for a young patient to be peeled away from their parents as they head into surgery; this truly helps everyone involved,” said one pre-op nurse.
The cute mini cars are designed for kids ages 2-7 and put a smile on those scared little faces whether they choose the pink Beetle or the black Mercedes. They can be operated by the kids or by remote control, have functioning headlights and taillights, and even a radio so the kids can choose what music they want along the drive.
As pre-op nurse Kimberly Martinez points out, the fun little exercise helps more than the kids, too.
“When the children find out they can go into the operating room riding in a cool little car, they light up and in most cases, their fears melt away. In addition, when parents see their children put at ease, it puts them at ease as well.”
