When Sharon Choksi got tired of trying to find clothes for her daughter and niece that the girls could actually play and be comfortable in, she decided to start her own clothing line, Girls Will Be. After all, like her company website proudly states, “there is definitely more than one way to be a girl – and it doesn’t always have to involve pink and sparkles.”
Which is not to say it can’t – plenty of little girls love those things. That said, I can’t imagine that most little girls would choose too-short shorts and tighter shirts for the times when all they want to do is run around and play with their friends. You know, just like little boys do.
There’s something disturbing about the way little girls’ clothes are cut smaller, shorter, and tighter than boys. I mean, they’re all kids, not people hanging out at a bar trying to pick up a date. Choksi’s inspirations, her daughter and niece, wanted clothes that weren’t frilly, “nothing with bows,” and “no sparkles” in which they can do things like “climbing trees, building LEGO creations, and playing with cars and trucks.”
Rock on Sharon. I know there are many parents who will be thrilled to fork over their hard-earned cash in order to keep their little girls comfortable and, you know, little for as long as possible.
