9 Book Series From Your Childhood That Are Still Releasing New Books

Most of us have those book series that we read and loved as kids – for me, it was The Babysitter’s Club, Nancy Drew Files, and A Wrinkle in Time – but you might not realize that some of them are still publishing new installments today.

It’s a welcome realization if you’ve got young readers in your house looking for content; here are 9 series you might have loved as a child that you could now share with your child – new volumes included!

9. The Berenstain Bears

I found this out last fall when our family moved and received a Berenstain Bears book about moving from our realtor. The first book was published in 1962, and even though the lessons can be a bit heavy-handed, children have adored them from the beginning.

The original authors (Stan and Jan Berenstain) have passed away, but their son Mike is now helming the series.

8. The Magic Treehouse

These books about history, mystery, and magic – penned by Mary Pope Osborne – have been delighting kids since the first one published in 1992. She’s continuing to take kids on adventures throughout history with her latest release coming earlier in 2020.

7. Nate the Great

This series about a boy detective has been popular since 1972, and the original author, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, continued to publish them until she passed away at the age of 90. The final few installments were co-authored with her son, Andrew, so let’s hope he brings us more in the future.

6. Goosebumps

Anyone who grew up in the 90s and 00s loved to be scared by R.L. Stine. His first Goosebumps book released in 1992, and the series now contains around 130 scary stories.

5. Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew has enjoyed many re-births since she first delighted fans in the 1930s. I read The Nancy Drew Files in the 80s and 90s and now, she’s sleuthing her way through The Nancy Drew Diaries.

4. Amelia Bedelia

Peggy Parish began writing the adorable heroine in 1962 and her nephew, Herman, kept it going after her death in 1988. He’s releasing books currently in a spinoff series called Amelia Bedelia & Friends.

3. The Hardy Boys

Frank and Joe Hardy have made their way into the 20th century, too, and the Hardy Boys Adventures have been updated to reflect current mysteries and hijinks, as well.

2. The Boxcar Children

The orphaned Aldens and their dilapidated boxcar home chugged onto the scene in 1924. They enjoyed a re-release in 1942 that included 18 new stories. The series now contains 150 books and they no longer live in a boxcar – they’re solving mysteries!

1. Little Critter

Author and illustrator Mercer Mayor is behind the ambiguous “little critter” that has starred in books since 1975. The author is in his 70s and is slated for a new release mid-2020.

I am so excited to hear these stories continue for new readers to find and love them, too!
