Women all over the world use contraceptive devices in order to have the freedom to choose when and if they have children. We put our trust in them, and even though they’re not perfect, they are typically close enough to perfect that it lulls us into a false sense of security.
Someone has to be in the small percentage of failures, a fact that had one of my more paranoid friends from college doubling up on birth control even after she was married.
Yeah. I know.
People have been taking tongue-in-cheek photos of their babies born after an IUD (intrauterine device, meant to control pregnancy), in which they have their newborn clutch the failed coil.
It’s funny, because by that point the parents have obviously decided whatever I guess we’re having another baby.
I suppose.
The device can’t be removed once a woman is pregnant (and actually its failure can cause a pregnancy to be high risk), and in the case of this little one – born recently at the Hai Phong International Hospital in Hai Phong, Vietnam – it came out right along with him during his birth.
The little boy was born healthy, weighing 7lbs, with no idea, of course, that his curious little fists made him famous the very day he entered the world.
Their obstetrician, Tran Viet Phuong, is the one who took the photograph. He noticed the baby hanging onto the device and snapped and shared it (which is awkward, if you ask me).
“After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture.
I never thought it would receive so much attention.”
Yeah, I hope the parents are okay with images of their newborn and the mother’s birth control device being all over the internet, because…
Be careful out there, friends.
I guess if you’re 34-year-old mother of 3, my friend from college might have been onto something after all.
