All families are different, because they’re run by people who come to relationships and childrearing with their own backgrounds and ideas.
Maybe your parents did something or said something because their parents did it, or their grandparents, and it’s just kept going…

For these 14 people, though, it wasn’t hard to realize that their parents were stricter than most – and that some of their rules were downright ridiculous.
14. These seem like fair rules.
Not saying I follow them, but…
No Play-Doh allowed as it might get into the carpet. This went for paint and glitter also!

13. I still don’t understand how this supposedly worked.
How could you get electrocuted in your house? Isn’t it grounded?
We couldn’t shower during thunderstorms for safety reasons. Crazy or legit? 🤷♀️

12. Where did the glasses go, then?
I have a lot of questions.
No glasses at the dinner table. I have no idea what my dad thought this was accomplishing

11. What else was she supposed to do?
There were so few options.
No TV so i smoked weed instead

10. This sounds lovely.
Not as a teenager, but now.
I had a bedtime of 9:30 on school nights all through high school.
When I left for college and my brother entered high school, suddenly that bedtime wasn’t a thing, so basically the 9:30 bedtime only applied to me.
They justified it by saying I got up earlier to fix my hair.

9. This is truly terrible.
This isn’t being strict, it’s emotional abuse.
I wasn’t allowed to cry. Ever. Punishment intensified if I cried
— Tory Estes Stevens (@ToryBadger) June 30, 2020
8. Oohh man teenager me would have hated that.
My grandfather was the same way when we were at his house.
No sleeping in. Ever. By 8am you should be up, bed made, eaten breakfast & doing dishes. 😴 Then I had kids & never let anybody wake them. So there.

7. That’s a horrible thing to put on kids.
Or adults. No one should think this way.
I’m supposed to act as if everyone is watching me. And I should care what everyone else thinks

6. This actually makes me angry.
Like, viscerally angry. How dare.
We weren’t allowed to sing at the dinner table or use sign language because my dad was the only one who couldn’t sign and he couldn’t stand being left out
— Shenanigans (@Shenanigans_luv) June 30, 2020
5. How can you eat like that?
No water? What?
No water or any other beverage with dinner as it “spoils your appetite.”
— jackhabit (@jackhabit) June 30, 2020
4. Seems like a strange hill to die on.
Everyone has their line, I suppose.
We weren’t allowed to sing at the dinner table or use sign language because my dad was the only one who couldn’t sign and he couldn’t stand being left out

3. I was okay until that last part.
Don’t hit your kids, y’all.
“Yes” was not acceptable. Had to be “Yes Sir” or “Yes Ma’am.” Not a military influence, but rather southern manners. “Yeah” might have gotten a reflexive slap.
— leahbug (@leahbug56) June 30, 2020
2. I need to know why?
Was it the devil?
I couldn’t paint my nails dark colors unless I was on summer break.
— dork macabre (@Tayl0rama) June 30, 2020
1. I guess my parents were strict?
I don’t see the problem with this, I guess.
Yes child of strict parents here. My curfew in HS was:
9pm for Freshman
10pm for Sophomore
11pm for Junior
12pm for SeniorMy Dad would say “nothing good is going on after midnight”
Okay Boomer tell that to ERIC CLAPTON. 😑— hollsballs BIRTHDAY!🤩🥳 (@hollsiemo) June 30, 2020
I’m just sitting here open-mouthed at some of these!
