The unexpected and total shift to virtual learning that so many families experienced last year was hard for everyone involved. Teachers had to come up with new and innovative ways to connect with their students. Kids had to adjust the way they learned, and they had to do it in an environment that, oftentimes, was less than optimal.

Parents were struggling to work from home, keep up with the technology challenges of schooling online, and helping their kids mentally and emotionally and physically show up for online school every day.

In short, it’s been a lot – even for adults, who mostly have far more tools for dealing with stress than five-year-olds do.

Arizona mom Kara McDowell snapped this picture of her kindergartener, Graham, in a moment when he was totally and completely frustrated with his online learning class.

He looks kind of like I do when I get a third round of revision notes from my editor.

She posted the image on Twitter with the caption, “My kindergartener on a 40-minute video call is a total mood,” and people obviously agreed – the tweet has more than 9k retweets and 58k likes.

It’s relatable, because we’ve all had that mood.

Graham attends virtual kindergarten for 5 hours a day, from 8 in the morning until 1:20 in the afternoon. He gets a few breaks along with the way, but I think we can all agree that’s a lot of time spent staring at a screen.

Even a teacher replied, saying “I feel this in my soul and I’m the teacher! Forty minutes is too long though. She needs to be chunking with no more than 10-15 minutes direct instruction at a time and lots of movement breaks. But it’s really hard to do classroom management virtually.”

To be clear, Kara has no issue with the teachers or the system in general; she was just sharing a moment in time.

She shared another from the same day, with her kiddo smiling and sharing his stuffed animal for show and tell.

It’s all about balance, people – and sometimes we all just need to flop across our chair and moan for a few minutes.

The nice thing about kindergarten is there’s still someone there to give you snacks.

Even if it’s just your mom.
